ー“FUNKTIONEN” Workshopー
Artists need to move freely between the right and left brain.
Even in the heat of improvisation, neither instinct alone nor knowledge alone can create a work. Technique by itself only lasts for five minutes. What truly matters for an artist is how to connect one’s skills to expression.

In this workshop, we break down the expressive “functions” we use in daily creation, isolating ways of thinking and sharpening awareness. Try, talk, try again—exploring mind, form, time, and space.

Beyond career stages and artistic genres, participants will communicate and push into new territories of expression together. This updated edition of the FUNKTIONEN Workshop builds on more than 40 years of experience in performing arts, from the 1980s dance theater and Pappa Tarahumara to international development over the past two decades. Originating from research in Estonia, the workshop has continued to evolve and was also taught as part of classes at KNUA (Korea National University of Arts), where Makoto Matsushima served as Visiting Professor in 2008, 2010, and 2018.
