HINOTORI Phoenix of Mountain & Phoenix of Sea brings together artists from around the world in a breathtaking fusion of live music, dance, language, and tradition.
Directed by Hiroshi Koike, this four-year international collaboration asks what it means to be human in an uncertain world.
An international ensemble of artists from Asia, Europe and South America weaves together contemporary music, dance, theatre, and circus with classical and traditional performing arts, creating a powerful dialogue between past and present, here, now, and the future.
At its core, HINOTORI asks the urgent question of what it means to be human in a world that is increasingly chaotic and uncertain. Live music, language, and genre-crossing performance are grounded in the creative vision of director Hiroshi Koike, who seeks to transcend borders—not only of geography and language, but of genre, values, and time itself.
The production is the culmination of a four-year journey of creation and collaboration, co-produced across The Grotowski Institute – Poland, Kuala Lumpur Shakespeare Players – Malaysia, and Sesc São Paulo – Brazil.
ABOUT THE SHOW
The story unfolds across two distinct performances: Phoenix of Mountain and Phoenix of Sea, each approximately two hours in length.
In Kyoto, only Phoenix of Mountain will be presented, premiering on Saturday, September 13 at ROHM Theatre Kyoto, South Hall.
The full two-part series, Phoenix of Mountain & Phoenix of Sea, will then be staged in Tokyo from Saturday, October 11 through Tuesday, October 14 at Nakano ZERO theatre.
Koike’s world is always free and dynamic. No matter how chaotic the world turns, people seem to burn with the joy of life.
Coming to realize – Ah! This must be what humans are truly like!
Banana Yoshimoto – Writer
HINOTORI is not a story—it is a prayer.
Through the ruins of destruction and loss, lives begin to resonate—beyond words, toward rebirth.
What unfolds is not merely a merging of cultures, but a profound, soul-to-soul connection—one where dignity and solitude reside within each individual.
In a world where conflict continues, I believe this work ignites a quiet spark of hope, offering a lasting question for those who will live in the next age.

THE STORY OF HINOTORI PHOENIX OF MOUNTAIN & PHOENIX OF SEA
Phoenix of Mountain – 山の神篇
It is 20XX. Two political parties dominate the government and fight for control. The city collapses — broken by a reckless regime and disaster. The people lose everything… and stumble into another world.
The dead dance. Monsters rise. Love and betrayal twist. Through music, movement, and words, the myth unfolds. Then — the Phoenix (Hinotori) appears. Is this the end, or the beginning of something new?
Phoenix of Sea – 海の神篇
It is years after the collapse. The people return from the Land of the Dead — only to find a world unraveling at the seams. Is this the future? Lust. Guilt. Ghosts. Monsters. Madness. Power spins out of control. The Phoenix’s warning becomes reality. The future now turns on the choices they make.
