Theatre in Tokyo – Where the ancient and contemporary intersect
Oath and Sin is a new work directed by Hiroshi Koike inspired by the Indian epic, Mahabharata
Bhishma, the hero destined to live by his vow.
A 60-minute journey through power, sacrifice, and fate, where the refined artistry of tradition meets the force of contemporary performance.
Noh master, Reijiro Tsumura is a Living National Treasure. In Oath and Sin, Tsumura portrays Bhishma, a key character of the Mahabharata, who is torn between his lifelong vow of celibacy and his duty as a protector.
Accompanied by the haunting sounds of Gagaku (ancient Japanese traditional court music) performed live by Yutaka Ota.
Follow Bhishma’s life from a young dutiful son to a wise old leader who is entangled by his intentions and duty for his people and family.
Oath and Sin premiered at the International Mahabharata Festival in Bhopal, India and was invited to National School of Drama Delhi (NSD), where the performances were met with standing ovations.
Now, after its acclaimed reception in India, this much-anticipated work makes its Tokyo debut.
